To Protect the Past
Chapter 15:

I awaken, but I am alone. Where are you?

--

Meanwhile Elsewhere:

“Mmmmm…” Fingers tensed and curled slightly as purple eyes slid open, blinking at the brightness of the room. Turning her head, an ear flicked as the sensation of pins and needles began to run through the limb.

“What?” The female muttered as she sat up slowly. A purple tail twitched in the air as the sheet covering her fell.

“You are awake.” Spoke a sophisticated voice from across the white walled room.

Turning, the cat spotted a humans figure in the doorway. Tilting her head, purple eyes narrowed in curiosity and caution. “Who are you?”

The human stepped forward, moving into the light from the window on the far wall and revealed their face. It was a female, about 4 foot 3 inches with long brown hair tied back at the base of her neck. Pointed ears poked out of the hair, with the right side pierced with a golden chain and a glowing fire ruby embedded inside of it.

Her eyes were a gentle soft blue, and seemed to smile even though that pale face was impassive like stone. Adorned on her head, above those pointed tips of her ears, were tiny little wings. They stuck outwards in a specific manner, held up with golden twine knitted through the tied back locks.

And there on her forehead was a dark orange crystal, embedded into the flesh. Clearly defined with no explanation to why it was there. She was also wearing a silky white dress that flowed with her movement, and set at the top was more golden thread.

“I am glad to see you have roused from your slumber. I am Elise, and you, are in Soleanna. The Crystal City at the Centre of the Crossroads.”

The cat turned her head away, as though looking through the window. While her iris was fixated on Elise out the corner of her eye. “My name is Blaze. A pleasure.” Her tone was not at all friendly, it was very stiff and formal. It showed how uncomfortable the female anthro was at this time.

“The pleasure is all mine.” Elise bowed her head slightly, acknowledging that she had heard Blaze while also greeting her without speaking.

The female cat looked down at her hands, which were now fisted in the sheet that was still covering her lap. “Did you...?” She sighed, eyes falling closed as her thoughts turned to her loved ones.

“Yes?” Enquired Elise, who had walked further in and was now standing at the window, looking out of it. Hands were clasped in front of her, as she turned to look at the anthro in the bed.

Blaze opened her eyes and stared at her hands hard for a long second, before lifting her slit irises to connect with Elise's blue ones. “Did you happen to find two others with me?”

The human tilted her head, the tiny wings seemed to gently flap with the gracefulness of her movement. Confusion was clear through her slightly narrowed eyes. “Two others?” Elise enquired.

“Yes.” The purple cat confirmed. “A white hedgehog anthro, goes by the name of Silver. And a human-hedgehog-fox hybrid, who answers to the names Kurisu or guardian.”

Elise turned away. Leaning against the wall as her blue eyes stared blankly at the window. 'A white hedgehog… could it be...?'

“I am sorry. But no one that you have described has been found within this city.”

Blaze cursed in her head, slamming a fist onto the bed. Red flickered round her fingers for a minute, before she took in a sharp breath and slowly let it go.

“But...”

Purple eyes looked up at the emotionless face of Elise in hope.

“...considering how violently you came through the unknown portal. Your friends could have ended up on one of the closer worlds we are connected to.”

Blaze blinked in confusion. “Worlds?”

Elise tilted her head slightly in a nod. An arm raised and a finger pointed towards the wall to her right. Purple eyes followed and widened at seeing what looked like a diagram of Hexagonal shapes, each with a name within. The centre most one had the name Soleanna, along with other names surrounding it such as: Humanised Earth, Anthromorphic Mobius, Halfling Serran, Godhood Demi and other such titles.

“This is the nation's of the universe that our fair city, Soleanna, is connected to.” The human said as she walked over and began trailing a finger down the painting. “But you came through from this one.” Her finger stopped on another name.

Blaze followed that finger and her eyes widened at the name: Distorted Chaos.

Blue eyes were fixated on that name as her fingers gently brushed the name. “This nation or sector of the portal system is unknown to the castle staff. In all our years of knowing about that place, there is only one thing that is certain. Only those who come from beyond our time or universe comes through that place.”

----------------------------------------

Earlier in the week:

Elise broke open the seal on a letter that had just arrived from the outside. She was maybe hoping for some answers to the anthro cat's presence, why she had been found beside a shattered portal which had never been used. But what she got instead in the letter, would change everything.

Elise.

While I would like to give you good news. I'm afraid that is not going to be possible.

Thank you, for passing on the crystal data storage you found on our young guest. After extensive research in the Zone's experimental facility we were able to unlock it and what we found was troubling.

As you know, the city of Soleanna was rebuilt from nothing. The universe reset, and the people changed. Time had become unravelled as you could say. We Zone Cop's had to mass quickly to stop the whole multi-verse from combusting at the seams.

All because of the removal of the fire of life, Iblis.

When Sonic blew out the flame, he set in motion the destruction of all reality as we knew it. We were stretched thin trying to keep reality in check and had to, how do you say… patch the flaying edges together. As best as I can describe it anyway.

Things shifted and merged together, people were flung out of their original worlds and into others. Some worlds died while others began to flourish with life. But still we had a problem, the lack of Soleanna on the universal map. It left a gaping wound in the patchwork we had in place.

So we rebuilt it anew. A home among the pathways between worlds. This recreated the portals that Soleanna was known for and gave them a new purpose, they were now  called travel mirrors.

But it seems time cannot be changed so easily. I reviewed the footage on this data crystal and what I saw chilled me. All the precautions that we had put in place. Every trap and plan came to nothing. They meant nothing.

I saw Iblis rising from the flames in the exact same future that should no longer exist. And I saw the city of Soleanna burned to the ground. The same as before.

Still I watched on, hoping other things would change. But to no avail. There was a white hedgehog called Silver, a purple cat called Blaze and the Shadow copy called Mephiles, just as before. All fighting a losing battle.

But then a new figure emerged. Covered in a material of black, a hood hiding his face. He directed the power of Chaos, in an Emerald I had never seen in all my years as a Zone Cop watching over the worlds.

I only caught a name just before the crystal went dark and the alarms started to blare about an unsanctioned time crossing. That name was: The guardian.

Searching the information about the time travellers as it came in, I saw there were five  beings who had passed the barrier between the present and their own time. Then when you sent me word Elise, of a female purple cat with the data cube, I then knew who had come through the portal. Realizing this I felt a shiver go down my spine.

Be careful my lady. If the events of the future, that has not yet come to pass, have started their motion, I fear for the future.

Find out what you can, anything at all.

May your mind be well and your will stay strong.

Zonic

Zone Cop

-

'How strange...' Elise thought, as blue eyes watched Blaze from the corner of her peripheral vision. 'That time should bend around on itself, just at an exact moment. Beacuse when Zonic received the crystal, the five beings had not yet passed through the boundary. Yet, when the castle guard came across the female anthro, the crystal data storage device was within her grasp.'

Elise tilted her head to the side, hands once again falling into a resting position clasped together. She turned to see Blaze slide her legs over the side of the mattress, and slowly stand up. 'How intriguing that these people may well be out-of-time. Not bound by the laws the rest of us follow, for they do not belong to this time stream.'

Yet while Blaze was focused on standing up, she didn't see the reddish glow that eclipsed those blue eyes. 'Fascinating…'

-

Blaze's POV:

“Blaze.” Purple eyes flicked up to look at the human, as her hands pressed on the bed to steady her body to stay upright. “They will turn up at some point. All travellers do.”

“Hmmm...” It was a non-committal sound not really agreeing or disagreeing, as the cat anthro's face gave nothing away to her current thoughts. Purple eyes turned away and gazed back at the Mural on the wall, running along those lines that connected the various places together and mused to herself. 'If this so called multi-verse is real, then I fear the consequences of the journey we took to get to this time. I remember all too well the warnings the Guardian told us, for such an occurrence.'

'But if this Elise’s words are true, then the danger we face will be that much greater. For the dark one who follows the Guardian will have possibilities to complete his purpose. To finally become that which he was created to be.'

'The only problem is, that Guardian did not say what that purpose was. Only through time would the danger unfold. Yet if my suspicions are accurate… Things may be worse than any of us could have thought.
'

“Also.” Elise's voice broke through the anthro's thought's, drawing her attention back to the human. Purple eyes narrowed in annoyance as lips pressed thinly against one another. If there was one thing the cat hated the most... it was being interrupted while thinking.

'I don't like you. Something seems off...'

“This data cube was found among your possessions. I understand it to be a recording cube, yes? But none of our scientists could access the information inside. Perhaps you could show us, at a later time?” It was clear from the way the other stressed time, that the question wasn't so much a request, as it was an order.

Blaze kept her attention on the Mural Wall, but her eye was fixed upon that cube. To her eyesight, it was glowing.

Golden symbols and shapes moved, appeared and disappeared at random. Cable wires, a bright white colour, stayed in place running down from all four sides. They were seemingly fixated about middle hight on each side and disappeared to down below where they would come together to form the base. This is where the chip would be shown, to be placed in it's recipients holder. Then the crystal inside would begin it's work, either to take in information or to release it's contents to those who wished to seek it.

Blaze then shut her eyes and shook her head. “I will not.”

“You won't?” Elise asked with narrowed eyes.

Sighing Blaze straightened up and stretched. Before turning to face the female fully. “More like I cannot. My DNA is not the right key needed to open the cube.”

“I see...” Frustration could be heard in Elise's tone as the human turned away and paced back towards the window. Hands reached out and unlatched the twin frames before pushing them both open. Then she rested her palms on the sill and stared out towards the clock tower in the distance.

Blaze, who was now curious about the place she had ended up in by complete coincidence, moved slowly towards the window. There was just enough room for the cat anthro to slip beside Elise and look outside.

As far as the eye could see, stores of different kinds, market stalls, tall apartment buildings, strange circular portals, a square that was clear the centre of town and lots of people. Anthro's, humans, halflings and many other strange and wonderful creatures passed alongside each other down below.

“Amazing is it not?” Spoke Elise's quiet voice beside her.

Blaze nodded, wide eyes following the pathways of the different beings below. “I've never seen so many people before. This is extraordinary!” Then she spotted a huge figure lumbering on it's way, towering at least five heads taller than many of the people.

'What is that!?' The cat anthro wondered with internal excitement. There was so much to look at, so many new things to see, taste and experience. The guardian's description's hadn't prepared her for this, it was a bit much actually, though Blaze didn't show it externally.

Though what she wished more at this moment in time, were that Silver could be here right now. So she could share with him this view for the first time together.

Thinking on the hedgehog, soon turned her attention onto the guardian. Deep inside, where she pushed all her softer emotions to the farthest corner of her soul, the cat anthro worried for the elder.

“Blaze.” That cultured voice beside the cat drew her attention back to the other person in the room. “Perhaps a tour of the Crystal City of Soleanna? You could get to know the place and it's people? Mayhap even find those you are looking for...”

Blue eyes were still focused towards the clock tower in the distance. Hands curled closed before lifting off of the windowsill and fell back down by the female humans side. Then her head turned, those little white wings flapping with the movement, as those strange eyes stared down into purple, solemn and sad.

“Come...” Then Elise turned and passed by Blaze, heading towards the door. Stopping by the open portal to the outside world, she looked over her shoulder once more. “Let us leave this sick room behind, you have spent enough time here.” Before disappearing beyond the open door.

Pointed ears flickered, flattening for a second before lifting back upright. The cat anthro crossed her arms, frowning at the door. “Strange lady.”

Walking towards the same door, she stopped and turned to stare at the room the anthro had just woken up in. “Silver...” She muttered. Before closing worried eyes and shaking her head. Then straightening up, uncrossed her arms and headed out of the door.

Behind the cat anthro, within the room upon the windowsill, was the data cube. It sat where Elise had left it, glowing as though lit from within by it's own light. Then it got brighter and brighter, making the golden cube almost vanish from slight. And there, from within the cube eight colours glowed. They seemed to flicker, before the golden glow faded once more, leaving the data cube sitting quietly once more.

Blaze then ran back in to the room, her eyes focused upon the cube and moved over to pick it up. The cat sighed in relief quickly glancing around the room, before leaving once again, this time with plans to not come back.

Chapter 1

---------

Author note: Ok you are all probably wondering why this took so long. I'll be frank, this chapter was a struggle. I kept getting stuck with the silly thing, Blaze seems to be a difficult character for me to write about. But I needed this part to open the story up more.

Plus I've got medical issues ongoing that are taking up time. I'm sick at the moment and are waiting to go to the docs, so the next chapters may take a bit of time. I apologise for this ahead of time.
